For as long as I can remember, storytelling has been my way of making sense of the world. From writing essays in school competitions to hosting shows at university, I’ve always found magic in expressing ideas, connecting with people, and sparking emotion through words and performance.
I didn’t have the language for it then, but I was already a content creator.
From the Classroom to the Camera
Growing up, I dreamt of being on TV shows like Top Billing and Top Travel — sharing stories that celebrated Africa’s beauty, creativity, and resilience.
To bring those dreams to life, I joined debating clubs, speech and drama groups, and later, Toastmasters — all to build my confidence and sharpen my voice.
Though my journey didn’t lead me to the TV screen (at least not yet 😉), digital media gave me something even better: freedom.
Freedom to tell stories in my own voice. Freedom to build my platform. Freedom to inspire others to start where they are.
Embracing the Creator Economy
When I launched my YouTube channel and blog — Escapes with TKay and tkaynthebe.com — I had no fancy equipment, just a phone and a story to tell.
Fast-forward to today: I’ve collaborated with brands like Alliance Group Investment Holding Company (Alliance Insurance) Limited and Malealea Lodge, Pony Treks & MTB, Lesotho to name a few, and I’m building an ecosystem that merges travel, lifestyle, personal finance, and storytelling — all rooted in African authenticity.
It’s been far from easy. I’ve faced self-doubt, imposter syndrome, burnout, and slow growth. But I’ve also seen what’s possible when you stay consistent and intentional.
Lessons for Aspiring Creators
If you’re just starting, here are a few truths that have guided me:
✔️ Start where you are. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, setup, or logo. Your voice is enough.
✔️ Know your why. It will sustain you when growth feels slow.
✔️Collaborate and learn. Growth is faster when you build with others.
✔️ Treat your craft like a business. Register it, price it right, and invest in your tools.
✔️ Have fun. Storytelling is art — let it bring you joy.
The creator economy is full of opportunities for African storytellers to share their voices with the world. Whether you’re in Maseru, Nairobi, or Harare, your story has power.
So here’s my invitation to you: Start telling it.
Follow my journey as a creator and financial educator bridging creativity, money, and purpose across Africa.
